The first problems arose today when I tried to install the frames. There are no markings or reference points for this. So it was a case of guessing and sanding. And then I forgot to take a photo of it... It'll come.

Ben MI've heard rhese old Williams brothers kits are terrible. I have a couple I'm looking forward to building.

Ben MOkay looking at this kit's timeline it was most recently issued by "s&m models." You can't make this stuff up.

Chris AutorI added some pics before I will glue the fuselage together. So you can see, it fits pretty well. There are tiny little pins and holes, some of them I had to remove for better fitting. Even the big part from the wing fits very neatly.
This is not my first Williams-kit, I built the Curtiss Commando, the Martin B-10 and the Northrop Gamma. I never had an issue with those kits. The instruction sheet is another theme: The pictures are just a possibility what you can do and the rest is plain text. You cannot compare those old kits with new, modern ones that come together as LEGO 😉

Chris AutorI designed the mask set for the use with a cutting machine. Mine is a brother scan'n'cut. The file is a svg file. If anyone is interested in the file, just ask me.

Chris AutorSince summer I have a new cutter and use it for cutting masks. I design them in Inkscape and the brother cutter cuts them out. I use 2 cm Tamiya masking tape, 2 layers and the cutter cuts the upper tape. So it is easy to peel the masks off. If anyone is interested, just ask me for the file.

Chris AutorI cut out the masks for the windows too. I pealed one of the windshields off to have a look and it is exact. As I have to airbrush some more times, I closed the window with liquid mask. You can see it on the starboard windshield.

I use the cutter for cutting masks, but more for T-shirt-design, airbrush stencis, stickers for kids, and more creative things.

Interesting process ! But how do you scan clear parts ?? A picture ? Your mask are fine because they have rounded angles, which in not the easiest thing to achieve with precision on a Silhouette... I'm really puzzled... and interested ! 🙂

Chris AutorNo, I do not scan clear parts. In case of square and rectangle-windows I measure them with a vernier caliper (?). Even in case of a trapezoid I take measurements on the kit. In case of rounded shapes I take a sticky-tape, give it over the shape and use a pencil in a style called "frottage". My cutter can even scan those pieces of tape and I get a jpg to redraw. In all cases I use the app "Inkscape" to draw or redraw the window shapes. As result I get a file with vectors. And with enough magnification I create the rounded corners. Now I take masking tape, 2 layers and let cut out the shapes. First try on the real kit, refining in Inkscape, cutting and second try and so on until it fits. If anyone wants my files, they can have it.

Chris AutorThe plane looks very nice, the kit was strange. Very soft plastic, fitting was not good, instructions were strange. At some stages I struggled. Painting has some failiures as the plane fell on the floor while/after airbrushing. What a mess. I don't like those long decals.
It will not be a contest-winning build, but a beautiful model of the plane. I am fine.
