A second project that I have been looking forward to for quite some time now: I am really enjoying this Airfix oldie: a highly interesting original, a kit with perfectly fitting moulds – and plenty of room for improvisation! Please bear with me regarding the cockpit; I only did what seemed appropriate given that very little will be visible here. That means an instrument panel from the 1:72 collection, control columns and seat belts that I made myself... As already mentioned, the fit is wonderful.

Following. Didn't realize how big the Superfreighter was in comparison to the C-47…..

Thank you mates!
Indeed it is big and ugly- and that is where its beauty lies 🙂

Welcome Nicolas!
Slowly but surely, the shapes are becoming recognizable—so much for the rough part! Now it's time to start refining...

Oh great. I've just been transported back to 1974 and I'm reading my Airfix catalogue.
5 January, 10:03
Oh yes, the Airfix catalogue! That was also a reason for burning ears in Austria in the 1970s... The sight of this car-consuming aeroplane has stayed with me ever since those days.

In order to achieve a well-positioned dividing line between the white and grey sections of the fuselage, I cut copies of the decal sheet to size and pinned them in the appropriate positions. The four new images show the boundaries of the black anti-glare strip in front of the cockpit windows. Today, I was also able to apply the light grey areas to the lower section of the fuselage.

The superfreighter now has its colour scheme – as far as it can be painted! The decals, which converge twice on narrow points at the bow, were measured precisely to ensure that the colour boundaries between grey and white are exactly in the right places. Now we will see how the adventure of 'applying decals' works out!
The engine cowlings are represented by two relatively uninspiring 'buckets'. I have now reworked these a little, with improvising the exhaust manifolds being the more time-consuming part: cable insulation of a suitable size was put together in pairs and should at least show 'something': Airfix has spared itself any attempt at representation here.

Tgank you, both, mates! Deccals have been applied by now.

Hard tp believe the fit is good, my impression was a bit different 😉

I can well imagine that this truly well aged kit has the potential to make all kinds of impressions!

Roland, so the decals on the new box aren't enough? It's there a problem with that?
25 January, 21:10
Thank you Michael!
Here are a few quick pictures of my version: this is the state of construction this morning. Now some of the notorious 'little things' (well, which aren't so little here) need to be fixed, but overall it will probably stay this way. I've made a lot of changes for my standards, which I will discuss in the presentation of the finished model – which hopefully won't be too long in coming!

Great topic - like it...and the build of course. Always a pleasure to watch - 👍

Thank you for your kind words, mates!
Today I was able to photograph the completed Bristol Superfreighter. I hope you like it!

I am pleased to present the completed Bristol Superfreighter! I replaced the four strut scissors on both landing gears and the antennas on the upper side. The exhaust systems, the large position light at the tip of the tail fin and a newly constructed hinge mechanism for the bow doors are completely new additions, as they were not included in the original kit. The most time-consuming task was sanding the rivet-covered surfaces; I tried not to eliminate the rivets completely, but to let them contribute slightly to the final appearance, as a visual reminder that there is metal under the paint, so to speak.
For the photos, in addition to tried-and-tested props, I also used a newly built Willys Jeep, which I wanted to remove from its military context with a 'follow me' type paint job.
For me, this was a truly insightful excursion into the past of model making as well as into my model-making future: it was so much fun that I will continue to build kits like this from decades long past in the last century from time to time! 🙂

WOW, amazing result!
Difficult to believe you've achieved that using a kit which is even older than an old git like me. 😄

A great result Roland, It's amazing what can be achieved with such old kits. 👍
1 February, 12:37
Hello mates! I am very pleased with your positive feedback and would like to thank you for it. They say you can't make a racehorse out of an old hack, but trying your best is fun – and even more so with such positive responses. Thank you all!

I agree with mates 👍
Roland, You've done a fantastic job with an old and unusual kit, giving it a much-needed second chance thanks to your skilled hands. You can feel proud every time you see it on the shelf. I'm thinking of getting one of these, although in any case it will never suit me as well as it suits you.
Great job and fantastic result.
Congrats!

...cool plane...it makes up for being sorta ugly by being huge....did u giggle much makiig this one?
2 1 February, 19:48
It is a bit ugly isn't it? But in a beautiful way, somehow - especially now! Does anyone know how long these operated for? I feel I may have seen one (BUA or BUAF) plane spotting from the roof the Queen's Building (Heathrow) in around 1978-79. If not maybe it could have been a Carvair.
2 February, 07:34
It's ugly enough to look interesting. Brilliant job Roland, makes me wanna build the Sabena example, need to find a storage space first as I already have the BUA one 😄
2 2 February, 11:13
Another great model, Roland! You did a fantastic job on this old kit.
2 February, 20:36
Hello mates, I am impressed and, of course, delighted by your interest in the model and your numerous comments on this apparently interesting kit from Airfix! Thank you very much

Great no nonsense build Roland. Still impressed by your work. Kinda wish you would make some videos of your builds but if course that would probably be a distraction from making them. Congratulations on another success.
9 February, 09:20
Thanks, mates! I think the videos would be an interesting idea and I'm honoured. But it would actually take up too much time. Well, I've got a feel for it: anyone who wants to can watch my model video attempts on YouTube... 🙂
