I'll start this build report with a few photos that are already 'in medias res': right in the thick of the rapidly progressing build. In fact, Zvezda's version of this testbed is an extremely comfortable kit to build; the number of parts is manageable, and the parts themselves are of quite high quality in terms of detail and fit. I imagine things will continue at a similar pace here... In the cockpit, I've made some improvements using an etched parts set for a MiG 29; the KA 36 seat is from ResKit.

We're a few steps further along with the MiG 1.144: everything has been filled and sanded down, and as you can see, a light touch of preshading or 'prelighting' has already been applied. Now we can move on to the two colours for the top and underside!

The MiG 1.144 is now slowly entering the home stretch – the final details are still missing, including such a minor detail as the massive slats, which, when the model is parked, are to be fitted pointing upwards at an angle of 20 degrees...
Most of the effort has gone into the cockpit. If you were to build it straight from the box, it wouldn't exactly be empty, but it'd be pretty lacking in detail. So I used the photo-etched parts set from a MiG 29 to breathe a bit of life into the cockpit. It looks quite decent, even if some parts need a fair bit of bending. The opening mechanism for the raised canopy was built entirely from scratch. The canopy itself was also refined with a few suitable photo-etched parts from my spare parts box.

You'll: 'The end is near!'
(I've always wanted to say that 🙂)
Thank you!

Looks fantastic, job well done Roland!
Super interesting the way the canopy opens, it's unique as per my basic knowledge.
How was the fit of this kit? If it fits well, I might build it one day.

Thanks you both for your encouraging words! The parts fit together very well, so the build goes quickly and without any complications. If you want to go the extra mile, you can focus on the level of detail in the cockpit, the wheel wells or the external hardpoints. All in all, a kit I can highly recommend!

Thank you, Roland. In this case I'll add it to my modelling wishlist 🙂 cheers

This small but excellent model-building experience has now come to an end. Zvezda has packed the box with well-made and, above all, precisely fitting parts. 'Well-made' refers, for example, to the razor-sharp trailing edges of the surfaces, which are made possible by the kit, or to the clever design of the complex air intake beneath the cockpit. (Well, when I think of Revell's 1:48 scale Tornado... . 🙂 Where the kit could be improved is in the detailing: the cockpit, landing gear bays/legs and the external pylons have been enhanced with an interior set for a MiG 29 and extras in the form of photo-etched parts from my spare parts box. The static dischargers at the wing tips also come from the MiG 29 set.
Thank you for your interest and your motivating feedback!

Great job. The photos are particularly good; actual sunlight and the reflection of the sky is transformative in terms of realism. I think I will also be adding one of these to my stash!

Neat 👍 A great rendition of this very much distinct looking "not quite paper" plane!
I have the old Revell boxing flying around somewhere, will surely reference your build when I get to mine...
