The M 47 entered service with the Bundeswehr in early 1956. The last of 1.100 tanks followed in March 1957. Service endet in 1968, when M 48 A2 C and Leopard 1 had replaced the M 47. Only minor changes were made during use in the Bundeswehr such as smoke dischargers and rain deflection stripes on both sides of the turret (M 47 G).
