1/48 Hasegawa F-104G Starfighter 'Bundesfighter'

 

Started on the road in a hotel. 

Molds starting to show their age but with some work should turn out pretty nice. 

Getting ready to button 'er up. 

Wait! Like most modern jets, the Starfighter has a number of position lights. 

The Port and Starboard lights on the intake sides are a PINA because of their position next to the intake blank off. Now, almost everyone knows about the Mod Podge & colored clear paint trick... 

Me and another modelling friend got to talking and thought - what if someone didn't have access to any clear modelling paints? Or perhaps didn't have the funds to get them. He had used food coloring with epoxy on big rig cab turn signal indicators. I told him I would give it a try. The rear top Position Lights on the Starfighter were relatively small and both were the same Orange/Amber color. If it didn't work it wouldn't be a big deal. 

The food coloring package cost US $3.50 with tax at the local Walmart. 

It didn't take long to mix up some Mod Podge & food coloring to the approximate color. ( It did dry a bit darker than I intended) 

The rear bottom position light was just a regular white light so I used the clear part supplied by Hasegawa. 

I let the fill dry for a couple of days. The result seems to work great!
