Roland Sachsenhofer AuthorThese photos kick off the build report for a project I'm already enjoying: the kit features some truly wild shapes and the whole thing has to be literally hammered together with cyanoacrylate, but the result promises to be quite an unusual sight. I'll be borrowing the cylinders for the radial engines from two Polikarpov Po-2s; these will be compensated for with some lovely resin engines.

Roland Sachsenhofer AuthorThings are starting to get exciting here: I'm going to drill holes at both ends of each of the 14 struts so that I can fit a fine wire through them, which will give the whole structure stability. This also allows for a bit of flexibility in terms of length and – not least! – makes it look more true to the original. Next, I'll have to assemble the whole thing using all four of my hands and twenty fingers....

Roland Sachsenhofer AuthorI'll show you a short time-lapse of what's been happening over the last few days with the parasol: A parasol grows well in the woods – so a little grove of struts is being prepared... Well, in any case, I've actually drilled holes in both ends of all the struts and extended them with suitable wire. That should certainly make a few things easier. Incidentally, I've also drilled out the wheel axles and fitted them with slightly thicker wire: both wheels need to be mounted with a slight upward and outward tilt, so I wanted to play it safe.
The cylinders of the radial engine are a case in themselves: the ones from the kit are definitely not usable. So I decided to strip two ICM kits of the Polikarpov Po-2 to get the nine cylinders I needed. (Don't worry, these two lovely kits have been fitted with even better resin engines 🙂) I've detailed the whole thing on this model as neatly as I possibly could. Next, the whole thing will be painted – then I can get started on fitting the "AVACS radome"!

Roland Sachsenhofer AuthorThe workbench is one project lighter—and the display case is one oddity richer: Nemeth's Parasol was finished today! I'm especially delighted because, while Avis kits allow for extraordinary projects, they tend to be on the rough side—as I've already discussed in this build blog. One final challenge was getting the pane to sit correctly on the ends of the struts along all three axes. Fortunately, I was still able to make adjustments for a few seconds while the cyanoacrylate adhesive was setting. So, once again, it's "all's well that ends well" 🙂
