Roland Sachsenhofer AuthorThis is going to be an interesting build – exciting right up to the very end, when the masks are removed. The photos will probably explain how I'm going about depicting the cabin doors as open. I'll be sealing the door openings from the inside with masking tape; the inside of the windows will also be masked, just to be on the safe side.
The fit isn't half bad; if this continues, it could make for a relatively hassle-free assembly. Well... if!

Roland Sachsenhofer AuthorFirst coat of paint: here, the transparent parts are being painted on the inside; the subsequent layers of paint will show on the outside. I'm particularly interested to see how these transparent parts – which have been difficult to assess so far – will look as invisible surfaces. Now I can get on with making any necessary touch-ups and sanding down the surface.

Here are two new photos showing the progress of the build: sanding down the transparent parts in such a tight space as the front of the bow cockpit was a bit of a challenge.
Now it's just a matter of doing a bit of finishing work, then the first coats of paint will go on!

Roland Sachsenhofer AuthorThe Sikorsky R5 takes things a few steps further: Gunze's slightly lighter H52 'olive drab' will now be applied to this pre-shaded and pre-highlighted surface. Incidentally, the two whales in the background show the 'rival' Q and P class zeppelin projects, which are nearing completion. There will be new pictures of these today as well.

Roland Sachsenhofer AuthorEven though I'll actually be sitting in front of the TV watching the World Cup today, I'll quickly show you a few pictures of the current status of my Sikorsky R-5 build. Not that I'm complaining, but this is a kit that requires a lot of thought and trial and error. The amount of rework isn't insignificant... Okay, commercial break over—back to Austria vs. Spain! 🙂

Roland Sachsenhofer AuthorLight and shadow are closely intertwined here: not only does this milestone in the history of rotary-wing aircraft come as a buildable model, but the surfaces also feature beautiful details and textures, whilst the shapes and their proportions are particularly pleasing. On the other hand, other factors make the build very difficult: the assembly instructions are an absolute disaster and leave you high and dry at crucial points. And this is a real challenge: the assembly of the rotor head, for example, was based largely on my own research and involved a great deal of 'scratch-building'. In my kit, the clear parts were extremely cloudy and scratched, so I spent a lot of time sanding and polishing them to a clear finish. The two stretchers are a story in themselves; here, the otherwise decent fit and alignment was completely lacking.
Ultimately, however, I am of course very pleased to be able to display this handsome and characterful helicopter in a 'Korea'-style setting!

Roland Sachsenhofer AuthorHi Jennifer, I just "recreated" a few pictures from the photo shoot for you. The props are simple—mostly things I came up with myself that can be used in many different ways—or very useful accessories, like the cardboard hangar kits from GPM.
I think the magic lies in the image design and composition. Since I've already given a few talks on this topic at model-making conventions, I'm putting together a short guide on photographing models. If anyone's interested, just let me know. I'd be happy to send you a copy.
