The first of the two Zeppelins, the naval airship L20, was completed yesterday. Whilst building it, I thought about how I might depict it: in May 1916, following a raid on targets in the north-east of the British Isles, the Zeppelin L20 was destroyed in a dramatic incident during an emergency landing in neutral Norway. Photographic records capture this crash, which dragged on for hours, quite well. I used these as a guide to recreate the scene in Hafrsfjord near Stavanger as a photographic diorama. It was great fun!
The series of images shows the L20 slowly entering the water stern-first, where it would eventually break apart. A few more simple images show the still-intact L20 in flight... Although I'll be describing the scene in more detail in a later article, I can only advise anyone interested to look it up now using relevant search terms such as 'Zeppelin L20' and 'Hafrsfjord, Stavanger' – the events are truly gripping!
